What is an HGV & Bus medical?

This is a DVLA Group 2 medical assessment required for new or renewing HGV and bus drivers. It includes a full health check—vision test, blood pressure reading, and a review of your medical history—to ensure you’re fit to drive large vehicles professionally.

When do I need to take this medical?

You’ll need an HGV or bus medical when applying for your first Group 2 licence, and then every 5 years after age 45. After age 65, it’s required annually. The DVLA uses this to confirm you’re safe to drive heavy or passenger-carrying vehicles.

What do I need to bring to my HGV or bus medical?

Please bring photo ID, any corrective eyewear you use, a list of any current medications, and details of any medical conditions. If you’re renewing, also bring your current licence and any relevant DVLA paperwork.

Can I still drive if I fail the medical?

If your current licence is still valid, you may be able to continue driving under Section 88 while the DVLA processes your new application. However, if the licence has expired or the DVLA advises otherwise, you must stop driving until further notice.
